A relatively new addition to Abbeydale Road, The Rude Shipyard is the cafe I’ve been looking for. With the look and feel of someone’s front room (it must have been on previously), the place specialises in real homemade food and boy, is it good.
Head down there on a sunday for a full english and you’ll see why. There’s no fried bread but homemade soda bread. Soda bread! Their veggie options are cracking too, indeed they always substitute a meaty sausage for the best veggie sausage I’ve ever tasted. With lashing of Hendo’s, this brekkie is a real treat.
But The Rude Shipyard isn’t just a cafe. It’s a bookshop with a thriving book group (‘The Rude Shipyard beneath my window’ is from Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell), sometimes it’s a gallery with their upstairs taken over with local artwork and a music venue. Last summer, as part of Tramlines music festival, Rude Shipyard was the scene for one of the best gigs I’ve been to. Their tiny upstairs living room was taken over by some acoustic greatness by Neil McSweeney and others (I’ve forgotten their names unfortuantely) – oh and 50 or so listeners squeezed into the tiny space. It probably broke thousands of health and safety rules but it made a terrific evening of music and homemade speciality pies and ale.
Next weekend is their Anti-Valentines Ball: Cupids and Nooses. They’ll be live music from 1pm on both days plus cabaret, poetry and much more. Count me in.
A truely great place.
here here!!
My mate was raving about this place when we were chatting yesterday. Your description is much more coherent (yes, we’d been n the pub). Defo going to visit.
